what are YOU doing this Thursday?

Shameless plug!

The Fordham Satin Dolls are singing at the RHA Talent Showcase on Thursday 2/23 at 7pm in McGinley Second Floor Lounge. It’ll be a great night of performances you won’t want to miss. What else are you going to do? Stay at home and listen to the radio?

(Can you spot me?)

UPDATE:

WE WON!!! THE SATIN DOLLS WON!! Thank you so much to everybody who came, supported, and voted for our performance! We sang "Can't Hurry Love" and a 90s Boyband Medley featuring "I Knew I Loved You", "I Want It That Way" and "Tearing Up My Heart". We danced, we goofed around, and we had an overall good time- which is what really matters. Well, that and the $600 we won! Whoohoo! Satin ribbons for everybody!

glitter and be gay

One of the things I love most about my theatre classes at Fordham is how much I learn without even realizing it.

Last week we had to make dioramas of Greek myths and present them to the class. (I chose the story of Echo and Narcissus.) People got so ridiculously creative, they thought outside of boxes I didn't even know existed.

Mine was fairly straightforward, although I had a LOT of fun making the costumes and sets, using everything from shopping bags, to tea, to dirt from my own back yard. I thought I'd post it here since it's somewhat theatre related and since I can give a shoutout at Holly for inspiring me to be crafty.

Oh, and in reference to the title of this post and to tie it back to Broadway...

rip broadway

No, Broadway isn't dying. But it sure feels like it is.

Off the top of my head, I can think of at least nine shows that closed this month (January): Hugh Jackman- Back on Broadway, Billy Elliot, Lysistrata Jones,  An Evening With Patti LuPone and Mandy Patinkin, Follies, The Mountaintop, Relatively Speaking, Chinglish, and On A Clear Day You Can See Forever.

Although that quantity seems daunting, there are a lot of different factors to consider.

Many of those shows had limited engagement runs, which means they knew they were going to close in January when they first began performances. Other shows, however, were greeted with much less enthusiasm than they had expected, and were forced to close their doors earlier than they would have liked.

Unfortunately, dying shows are part of the cycle of theatre life. Last year, for example, 14 shows closed in one week alone! And to look at the positive side, at least 20 shows are confirmed to open within the next few weeks/months. Those numbers aren't so bad, right?

Out with the old, in with the new! Here's to a great spring season in 2012.
